How to Set Up Google Business Profile (NZ Guide)
If there's one thing every NZ small business should do, it's set up a Google Business Profile. It's free. It takes about 30 minutes. And it puts you on Google Maps and in local search results.
Here's how to do it properly.
What Is Google Business Profile?
Google Business Profile (GBP) is the free listing that shows up when someone searches for a local business. You've seen it -- the box on the right side of Google with the business name, photos, reviews, phone number, and map. Or the "3-pack" of businesses that appears at the top of local searches.
If you search "plumber West Auckland" right now, the businesses that show up in that map section all have Google Business Profiles. If you don't have one, you can't appear there.
Step 1: Create or Claim Your Profile
Go to business.google.com and sign in with a Google account. If you don't have one, create one -- use your business email if possible.
Search for your business name. If it already appears (Google sometimes creates placeholder listings), click "Claim this business" and follow the verification steps. If it doesn't exist, click "Add your business".
You'll need to enter your business name exactly as you want it to appear. Use your real business name -- don't stuff keywords in there. "Smith Plumbing" is fine. "Smith Plumbing Best Plumber Auckland Cheap Rates" will get your listing suspended. Google's guidelines for business names are strict on this.
Step 2: Choose Your Category
This is important. Your primary category tells Google what kind of business you are. Pick the most specific one available.
For example, if you're a plumber, choose "Plumber" -- not "Home improvement" or "Contractor". Google has very specific categories. Some examples for common NZ trades:
- Plumber
- Electrician
- Building contractor
- Landscaper
- Painter
- Roofing contractor
- Auto electrician
You can add secondary categories too. A builder might add "Home builder", "Bathroom remodeler", and "Kitchen remodeler" as secondary categories.
Step 3: Set Your Service Area
If you go to customers (like most tradies), you'll want to set a service area rather than showing your home address. You can list specific suburbs, cities, or regions.
For a West Auckland plumber, you might add: West Auckland, Henderson, Titirangi, Glen Eden, New Lynn, Te Atatu, Massey. This tells Google where to show your listing when people in those areas search for your trade.
Step 4: Add Your Contact Details
Add your phone number and website URL. If you don't have a website yet, get one -- even a simple one-page site helps massively. A GBP listing with a website ranks better than one without. Check out how much a website costs in NZ -- it's less than most people think.
Make sure your phone number matches what's on your website. Consistency matters for local SEO.
Step 5: Verify Your Business
Google needs to verify that you're real. For most businesses, they'll send a postcard with a verification code to your business address. This takes about a week.
Some businesses can verify by phone or email. Google will tell you which options are available to you.
Don't skip this step. Your listing won't appear in search results until it's verified.
Step 6: Add Photos
Profiles with photos get more clicks. Add at least 5-10 photos:
- A logo -- this shows up in search results
- A cover photo -- pick your best work photo
- Photos of your work -- completed jobs, before-and-after shots
- Photos of you/your team -- people like to see who they're hiring
- Your vehicle -- if it's sign-written, show it off
Use real photos, not stock images. Customers can tell the difference, and Google can too.
Step 7: Write Your Business Description
You get 750 characters. Use them well. Describe what you do, where you work, and what makes you different. Write it like a human, not a marketing brochure.
Good example: "We're a residential plumbing business based in Titirangi, covering all of West Auckland. We handle everything from leaky taps and blocked drains to full bathroom renovations. Family-run, fully licensed, and we always clean up after ourselves."
Bad example: "Your trusted partner for all plumbing needs. We deliver excellence in every project we undertake." That says nothing.
Step 8: Set Your Hours
Add your business hours. If you're a tradie who works Monday to Friday 7am-5pm, put that in. If you offer emergency callouts, add "24/7" or note it in your description.
Keep these updated. If you close over Christmas or take a holiday, update your hours. Nothing annoys a customer more than showing up to a closed business.
Step 9: Start Getting Reviews
Reviews are one of the biggest factors in how Google ranks your listing. More reviews (and better ratings) = higher ranking = more visibility = more calls.
We've got a full guide on how to get more Google reviews, but the short version is: ask happy customers right after you finish a job, and make it easy by sending them a direct link.
Step 10: Keep It Updated
A GBP listing isn't set-and-forget. Google likes active profiles. Things you should do regularly:
- Add new photos every month or so -- show off recent work
- Post updates -- Google Business has a "Posts" feature where you can share news, offers, or recent projects
- Respond to reviews -- thank positive reviewers, address negative ones professionally
- Answer questions -- customers can ask questions on your listing, make sure you answer them
- Update your services if you add new ones
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Keyword stuffing your business name -- Google will suspend your listing
- Using a fake address -- if you don't have a shopfront, use the service area option instead
- Ignoring reviews -- especially negative ones. A professional response shows other customers you care
- Not adding a website -- a proper website linked to your GBP listing helps both your website and your listing rank higher
- Inconsistent information -- your name, address, and phone number should be exactly the same on your website, your GBP, and any other online listings
That's It
Setting up a Google Business Profile takes about 30 minutes of actual work (plus waiting for the verification postcard). It's free. And for many local businesses, it's the single most effective thing you can do to get found online.
Pair it with a proper website and some basic SEO, and you'll start showing up for the searches that matter.
