Do Tradies Need a Website?

Short answer: yes. But you already knew I was going to say that -- I build websites for a living. So let me give you the honest version, including when a website might not be the right move.

The "Word of Mouth" Argument

Every tradie says the same thing: "I get all my work from word of mouth." And for a lot of tradies, that's true. Referrals are gold. If you're fully booked six months out and turning work away, maybe you don't need a website right now.

But here's what happens with word of mouth in 2026: someone recommends you to a mate. What does that mate do? They Google you. If there's no website, no Google Business Profile, nothing -- they start wondering if you're legit. Are you registered? Are you insured? Are you still operating? The NZ Government recommends every business has a website.

They don't call you to ask. They just go with the next tradie on the list who does have a website.

A website doesn't replace word of mouth. It backs it up. When someone hears your name, your website confirms that you're the real deal.

The "Facebook Is Enough" Argument

Facebook is great for showing off your work. Before-and-after photos, job updates, the occasional funny post about a Monday morning on site. It builds trust with people who already follow you.

But Facebook has a problem: it doesn't show up on Google.

When someone searches "plumber Henderson" or "electrician Titirangi", Facebook pages rarely appear in the results. Google shows websites, Google Business Profiles, and Google Maps listings. If you're not in those results, you're invisible to everyone who doesn't already know about you.

Think about how you find businesses yourself. When was the last time you searched for a plumber on Facebook? You Googled it. Your customers are doing the same thing.

What Tradies Are People Searching For?

To show you what I mean, here are the kinds of searches people are making right now:

  • "Plumber near me"
  • "Electrician West Auckland"
  • "Builder Henderson"
  • "Landscaper Titirangi"
  • "Roof repair Auckland"
  • "Emergency plumber North Shore"
  • "House painter quotes Auckland"

These are people who need a tradie right now. They're not browsing Facebook. They're on Google, ready to call someone. If you have a website that shows up for these searches, you're the one they call.

We build websites specifically for tradies that target exactly these kinds of searches.

What a Website Does That Facebook Can't

Shows up on Google

This is the big one. A properly built website with basic SEO will show up when people search for your trade in your area. Facebook won't.

Looks professional

A website with your own domain (yourname.co.nz) looks professional. A Facebook page looks like everyone else's Facebook page. When a homeowner is choosing between two plumbers, the one with a proper website looks more established.

Lists your services clearly

On Facebook, your services are buried in posts and the "About" section. On a website, they're front and centre. Visitors can see exactly what you do, where you work, and how to contact you -- in ten seconds.

Works with Google Maps

When you have a website linked to your Google Business Profile, you show up in the Maps results. That's the box at the top of Google with the map and three businesses listed. That's prime real estate.

Collects enquiries 24/7

A contact form on your website works while you're on the tools, while you're asleep, while you're on holiday. Someone can fill in their details at 10pm on a Tuesday and you pick it up in the morning.

When You Might NOT Need a Website

Being honest here. There are situations where a website isn't the priority:

  • You're a subcontractor. If all your work comes from one or two builders and you never deal with the public, a website won't bring you work. Your clients are builders, not homeowners.
  • You're about to retire. If you're winding down in the next year or two, it's probably not worth the investment.
  • You genuinely can't take more work. If you're booked out for months and not interested in growing, a website is unnecessary. But even then, having a simple online presence helps when you eventually need new clients.

For everyone else -- especially tradies who deal directly with homeowners and want a steady flow of work -- a website is one of the best investments you can make.

It Doesn't Have to Cost a Fortune

One of the biggest misconceptions is that a website costs thousands. It doesn't have to. Our Starter package is $749 inc GST -- that's a one-off cost, no monthly fees. For less than the cost of a decent tool, you've got a professional website that works on phones, shows up on Google, and makes you look legit.

Compare that to what one new job is worth. If your average job is $500-$2,000, the website pays for itself with one or two enquiries that convert.

The Bottom Line

Word of mouth is great. Keep doing it. Facebook is useful. Keep posting. But neither one replaces a website when it comes to getting found on Google by people who need a tradie right now.

A website is your shopfront. It's open 24/7. It shows people what you do, where you work, and how to get in touch. And it's a lot cheaper than you think.
