Why Your Tradie Website Isn't Getting Leads

You paid for a website. Maybe it looked good when it launched. But the phone isn't ringing. The contact form isn't filling up. You're starting to wonder whether the whole thing was a waste of money.

It probably wasn't. But there's a good chance your website has one or more of these common problems. The good news is they're all fixable.

Problem 1: Nobody Can Find It

This is the biggest one. Your website might look amazing, but if it doesn't show up when someone Googles "plumber Henderson" or "electrician West Auckland", it's invisible.

Most website builders set up a site, make it look nice, and call it done. They don't do any SEO -- the stuff that gets you found on Google. No keyword-optimised title tags, no meta descriptions, no local search setup.

The fix: Every page on your site needs to target the searches your customers are making. That means having "plumber" and your service area in the title tag, the headings, and the content. Not stuffed in awkwardly -- just present naturally. We cover this in detail in our SEO basics guide.

Problem 2: No Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the listing that appears in Google Maps and the local "3-pack" at the top of search results. If you don't have one, or it's not set up properly, you're missing out on the highest-visibility spot on Google.

A website and a Google Business Profile work together. Your website gives Google the detailed information it needs. Your GBP puts you on the map -- literally.

The fix: Set up and optimise your Google Business Profile. We've got a full step-by-step GBP setup guide that walks you through it.

Problem 3: It's Not Mobile-Friendly

Most people searching for a tradie are on their phone. They're at home with a leaky tap, or on the job site needing a sub-contractor. If your site doesn't work properly on a phone -- if they have to pinch and zoom, if the text is tiny, if the buttons are hard to tap -- they'll leave.

Google also ranks mobile-friendly sites higher in search results -- you can verify yours with the Mobile-Friendly Test. A site that looks good on a desktop but bad on a phone is working against you.

The fix: Your site needs to be built mobile-first. That means it's designed for phones first and then adapted for bigger screens. Every site we build at Groundwork Digital is mobile-first.

Problem 4: No Clear Call to Action

Someone lands on your site. They like what they see. Now what? If there's no obvious next step -- no phone number in the header, no "Get a Quote" button, no contact form -- they'll just leave.

You'd be surprised how many tradie websites bury the contact information. It's on a separate "Contact" page, three clicks deep, with no phone number visible on the homepage.

The fix: Your phone number should be visible on every page. Put a "Get a Quote" or "Call Now" button in the header. Have a contact form on the homepage, not just on a separate page. Make it stupidly easy for someone to get in touch.

Problem 5: It Loads Too Slowly

If your site takes more than 3 seconds to load, people leave. They don't wait around. They hit back and go to the next result on Google.

Common causes of slow sites:

  • Huge images that haven't been compressed
  • Too many plugins (WordPress sites are notorious for this)
  • Cheap hosting
  • Bloated code from website builders like Wix

The fix: Compress your images, ditch unnecessary plugins, and make sure your hosting is decent. Or better yet, get a site that's built lean from the start. Check out what makes a good trade website for the full checklist.

Problem 6: The Content Is Rubbish

Sorry to be blunt, but a lot of tradie websites say almost nothing. "We are a professional plumbing company providing quality services." That tells a customer absolutely nothing useful.

Your website needs to answer the questions your customers have:

  • What services do you offer?
  • What areas do you cover?
  • How do they get in touch?
  • How quickly can you get there?
  • Do you have any examples of your work?

The fix: Write like you're talking to a customer on the phone. Be specific about what you do and where you work. "We handle all residential plumbing in West Auckland -- from blocked drains to full bathroom renovations" is a hundred times better than "We provide quality plumbing services."

Problem 7: No Reviews or Social Proof

People trust other people. If your website has no reviews, no photos of completed work, and no evidence that you've done this before -- they're going to be hesitant to call.

The fix: Get your Google reviews sorted. Display them on your website. Add photos of your work. Show that you're real and that real people have hired you and been happy with the result.

Problem 8: The Site Looks Outdated

Web design has changed a lot. If your site was built in 2018 and hasn't been touched since, it probably looks dated. That doesn't mean you need flashy animations or a trendy design -- it just means the basics need to be current. Clean layout, readable text, professional look.

An outdated site makes people question whether you're still in business. If the copyright says 2019, that's not a great look.

The fix: A fresh build doesn't have to be expensive. Our packages start at $749 and give you a clean, modern site that looks professional on every device.

The Quick Checklist

Run through these and see how your current site stacks up:

  • Does your site show up when you Google your trade + your area?
  • Do you have a Google Business Profile linked to your site?
  • Does the site look good on a phone?
  • Is your phone number visible without scrolling?
  • Does the site load in under 3 seconds?
  • Does the content clearly say what you do and where you work?
  • Are there reviews or photos of your work?
  • Does it look modern and professional?

If you answered "no" to more than two of these, your website is costing you work.
